Together with two good friends I’ve been working on launching a new company: Tilaa. Tilaa is the Finnish word for “space” and that’s what we provide (well, actually “server-space”): We offer virtual private servers.

We want to try to take the Dutch hosting market to the next level: Our platform is completely automated and “self-service”. You can order, install and manage your servers directly online (provided you have a creditcard or your bank supports iDeal).

The concept isn’t new or original in the sense that we’re the first to do this, but as far as we’re aware we’re the first (or at least one of the first) to do this in the Netherlands. Currently our platform is based on Xen, but we’re considering a migration to KVM. Mostly because the pace of development of KVM is an order of magnitude faster and Xen isn’t supported by any mainstream Linux distribution anymore, which means we need to maintain our kernel and Xen packages (which isn’t trivial I can tell you). Of course all of this doesn’t matter to our customers, we can easily migrate back and forth between them, or even do both at the same time.

It’s been a bit quiet on my blog for a while. Not that I don’t have anything to talk about, I’ve actually been quite busy These are exciting times! Four weeks ago, our son was born! I proudly present: Thijmen!

He’s a very healthy boy. He sleeps very well (also during the nights fortunately) and he’s growing really fast! My girlfriend is doing really well too and she has almost completely recovered. I’m glad everything went ok.
